Questions:

1. During the discussion following a fellow student’s talk in your institute colloquium a great idea develops, which is potentially very important for your project.
a) Imagine, the presenter does not do anything with this idea. What do you do?
b) Imagine that the presenter decides to write a paper about it. Should everyone who was present during the discussion be a co-author? Why (not)?
c) Should the presenter’s supervisor be the first author? Why (not)?

2. Self-plagiarism
a) What is it?
b) Why is it a problem?
c) How can you avoid it?

3. There are people who only give a talk or present a poster on research the have already published.
a) Why would they do that?
b) Why is this behaviour understandable?
c) Why is this a pity?
d) Would you present unpublished data at a conference?

4. What other situations can you think of where you might run into trouble regarding your own or other people’s ideas?
